Reviews about Free People
- ★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆October 17, 2019, by A Google UserWhen I first saw this store at the end of a browsing day at the Green Hills mall it was exciting. I'm a throwback hippie who shops at thrift stores. I was looking for some specific pieces of clothing and I was sure to find them at Free People. My first impression of Free People by both the name and the visual decor was that it might be a fair trade store or have a portion of the profits go to another country with the idea that they are helping people to be free. My immediate next impression was that the small selection was incredibly expensive. I did not know at the time about the connection between them, Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters. After browsing and finding a few pieces I could have used if they were cheaper I start really looking around at the displays. I suddenly was able to tell that these displays had something wrong with them. I couldn't put a finger on it first but then I realized that I was looking at cliché interpretations of a social group and its ideals. This bothered me and with the exorbitant prices and small selection I had definitely ruled out my first impression of the store. Still, perhaps with hope, I wandered up to the desk and asked about the name. The cashier was extremely nice and patient with the question, smiling as she described how it was a name thought up by the same people who created Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters. She didn't know where it came from and was probably just created because of the look. I asked about the clothes being fair trade. It was obvious by her reaction that she'd heard that assumption before and very sincerely said that she was sorry but no. The only reason I gave this store more than one star was because the clothes are in my fashion and the woman working there was very nice. Otherwise, I'm a little upset about them (knowingly or not) putting on airs that they serve a certain people but fail to follow through by offering clothes that are too expensive and do not follow the values of the stereotyped community to whom they advertise. I won't go into this store again. Too much false advertisement for my taste.
